At the True Measure Collaborative (TMC), we’re proud to partner with passionate educators who inspire and support young learners every day. One such educator is Sonia Ruiz, Lead Teacher at Voices of Tomorrow (VoT), a community-based organization committed to culturally and linguistically responsive early learning for East African immigrant and refugee communities in King County.
Sonia, a native Spanish speaker who is also learning Somali, brings a deep dedication to the children and families she serves. This interview, translated from Sonia’s responses, offers a glimpse into her work and the impact she’s making.

Voices of Tomorrow is rooted in the belief that early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong success. The program focuses on supporting students through community-driven and community-centered approaches. For Sonia, working at VoT means being part of a mission to positively impact children’s lives while also supporting their families and the broader community.
A PEEK INSIDE SONIA’S CLASSROOM
As a Lead Teacher at VoT, Sonia’s day is centered around creating a nurturing and dynamic learning environment for her students. Her classroom is full of engaging activities that support students’ growth.
“I focus on fostering social and emotional skills, as well as physical and cognitive development. Active learning and creative games are at the heart of my teaching practice, helping students learn basic concepts while having fun.”
One of the most loved aspects of the classroom is the “center simulation games,” where children can act out roles such as firefighters, police officers, or nurses. Sonia also integrates outdoor time, music, and arts and crafts into her lessons to create a well-rounded learning experience.
EMPOWERING STUDENTS ONE STEP AT A TIME
Sonia shared a story about one of her students, Yasir, who started the year as a shy and reserved child. Initially, Yasir would observe his classmates from a distance, rarely engaging in group activities. His parents mentioned that he was more social at home, particularly with his older sister, which gave Sonia the insight she needed to help him.
Sonia worked to create opportunities for Yasir to interact with his peers in a comfortable way. She incorporated small group activities and gave students the choice to select books during class, making Yasir feel more at ease. Over time, he began to open up and engage more with his classmates, eventually proposing his own activity—building towers with blocks.
It’s amazing to see how, with a little patience and support, Yasir has become more confident and is now showcasing his personality and making friends.”
TEACHER GROWTH SUPPORTED THROUGH GUIDANCE
At the True Measure Collaborative, we’re glad to support educators like Sonia with tools and resources. She shares that the guidance received from the TMC has been instrumental in her growth as a teacher.
“TMC has helped me with unique challenges I face as a preschool teacher. They provide valuable coaching, which has given me the tools and skills to support my students more effectively. Learning to manage stress has been especially important for me. Keeping a healthy balance between work and personal life helps me stay positive and focused for my students.”
Sonia’s commitment to providing individualized attention to each child and setting clear, consistent rules in the classroom is strengthened by the professional development and support she receives from TMC. Every day presents new challenges in the classroom, and Sonia knows that it’s essential to be adaptable.
“I use resourceful methods to understand each student’s needs and levels. Behavioral challenges are common at this age, and I make sure to set clear rules from the beginning to help guide the students.”
With a toolkit full of strategies, Sonia is able to overcome challenges and provide the best possible learning experience. Through our collaboration, we are helping ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
Building a Strong Foundation for Student Success
Sonia’s hopes for her students go beyond academic success.
“My dreams for my students are rooted in their comprehensive development and wellbeing. By learning how to recognize, express, and manage their emotions in healthy ways, these students will be better prepared for their future. My goal for them is to build the resilience and curiosity that will help them overcome any challenges.”
For Sonia, creating a solid foundation of emotional intelligence and social skills is as important as teaching academic concepts. By promoting wellbeing and fostering a love of learning, she hopes to set her students up for a future full of possibilities.
INSPIRED TEACHING, INSPIRED LEARNING
We are inspired by Sonia’s dedication to her students and her ability to implement evidence-based strategies with such passion. Watching her interact with the children, seeing the way they respond to her care and support, is truly heartwarming. Sonia is skilled at adjusting her teaching style to meet her students’ needs, and it’s clear that she’s making a lasting impact on the children she teaches.
