Cassie Watkins, Program Manager at True Measure Collaborative

At the True Measure Collaborative, we know that lasting change in education starts with relationships—with students, with families, and with one another. Our team is at the heart of this work, bringing deep care, lived experience, and a shared commitment to supporting educators across Washington state.

This month, we’re honored to spotlight Cassie Watkins, whose journey with TMC has come full circle—from receiving coaching as a special educator, to now being the one offering that same care and guidance to others.

WHERE INCLUSION BEGINS

Cassie’s story is rooted in connection and purpose. Born and raised in Hawai‘i, diversity wasn’t something she had to learn—it was simply life.

Diversity is actually all I ever really knew, I thought that was the norm… that everyone always ate different things and spoke different languages.

It wasn’t until she moved that she experienced the culture shock that would shape her calling. “I think that because of my background, that’s what drives my work… everyone deserves an opportunity to have access,” Cassie said. For her, inclusion isn’t a buzzword—it’s a philosophy rooted in community, in recognizing that our differences are not weaknesses, but our collective strength.

Her commitment to inclusive education began early. At 13, she became a junior camp counselor and met a camper on the autism spectrum whose artwork opened her eyes to new ways of expression. “That was sort of my stepping stone,” Cassie reflected. “What else are all students capable of doing when there are certain barriers they don’t have control over?” That moment became foundational to her belief that every student has untapped potential waiting to be supported and seen.

FROM CLASSROOM TO COACHING

Cassie would go on to become a special educator in Spokane, where she encountered True Measure Collaborative for the first time—not as a colleague, but as a client. “I was on the receiving end of TMC services… I know the positive impact and how this model is so needed,” she said. Now, as a member of our team, Cassie brings that experience full circle, offering guidance grounded in empathy. “I just feel like this is where I’m meant to be right now.

Cassie’s coaching style centers on compassion. She urges educators to recognize progress that often goes unseen.

We talk about small wins, but those are the big ones. A student staying in class after months of struggle? That’s huge. Other skills will come, but we start by honoring where they are.

She also invites educators to bring flexibility and care to their practice. “Give yourself the grace to be flexible. Do what’s right for the student… that’s where the relationship begins.

A VISION FOR INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS

Cassie’s work is a powerful example of what it looks like to live the values of inclusion and belonging.

Inclusion should be the standard. It’s not hard work. It’s different work.

That spirit of care and collaboration extends to her role on the TMC team. “We’re a strong community of five,” she shared. “We approach everything with passion and intent. There’s always collaboration happening. We’re making a bigger impact than we realize.

Cassie’s presence on our team is more than a full-circle moment—it’s a reflection of what’s possible when inclusive education is not just something we talk about, but something we live together. Her story reminds us that when we prioritize relationships, lead with care, and stay grounded in equity, we build the kind of schools—and communities—where everyone belongs.
