The True Measure Collaborative supports educators and students across the state with a mission to foster collaboration and build educator capacity in service of equitable educational opportunities for all students – especially students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
The opportunities and education journeys for students with disabilities and multilingual learners are inequitable. In Washington State, systemic barriers for multilingual learners are especially high.
On the most recent state assessments, only 14.3% of multilingual learners met grade-level standards in ELA (as compared to 50.7% of all Washington students), and only 14.4% of multilingual learners met grade level in math (as compared to 39.1% of all Washington students.)
Providing education that is inclusive and fully responsive to the talents and brilliance of each student is at the heart of the TMC’s work, and in order to fulfill our mission, we implement multilingual learner program supports as a component of our fully inclusive school programming.
The TMC currently serves schools with the following student demographics:
%
Students from low-income families
%
Students of Color
%
Multilingual Learners (range from 0% to 30%)
We provide coaching and professional learning to our client schools with support from expert consultants Seeing Beyond, LLC. Seeing Beyond is a statewide provider of professional development and consultation for multilingual learner compliance and instruction.
Seeing Beyond has been of enormous value; school leaders and staff consistently rate their trainings as highly effective and frequently request continued and/or more support from year to year. This spring, the TMC is shining a light on Seeing Beyond’s work and impact!
BEYOND INSTRUCTION TO CENTERING INCLUSION
Diversity is celebrated, inclusion is created!
Each year, more and more Multilingual Learners (MLs) are in classrooms across our state, deserving education that centers their brilliance and equitable opportunities to succeed.
“This challenges our communities, school board members, school administrators, teachers, and staff to see beyond their English language limitations into their potential and provide equitable access to the core instruction in ways that accelerate their language acquisition, build on students’ strengths, and liberate them to meet their dreams.” [Seeing Beyond]
Seeing Beyond offers robust professional development opportunities tailored to the needs of individual schools. The individualized coaching series for site-based ML Coordinators is focused on compliance, program development and instruction. The ML program provides a series of comprehensive, school-wide learning opportunities for educators and school leaders to improve their practice and culturally responsive approaches:
